Agartala, Nov 7: Tripura BJP state president and MLA Abhishek Debroy on Saturday said the implementation of the tripartite agreement involving the Centre, Tripura government and TIPRA Motha would take time, making it clear that the final decision rests with the party’s central leadership in New Delhi.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a one-day workshop organised by the BJP’s Bharatiya Janajati Morcha at Bhagat Singh Youth Hostel in Agartala to mark Janajati Gaurav Diwas, Debroy said the process was not something that could be completed within a month or two, as several aspects needed examination.
“This is a very big decision. It may take five or six months or even a year. It is a lengthy process and not a one-day exercise,” he said, adding that the party had a positive intention towards implementing the agreement.
The BJP state president said TIPRA Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Debbarma was already in touch with Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Chief Minister Manik Saha, while discussions were also underway with the BJP’s central leadership.
“The ball is in Delhi’s court. Delhi will decide what to do and when. We cannot take such decisions from here. Whatever directions come from the central leadership will be implemented,” he said.
The agreement, signed in March 2024, aims to address the constitutional, political, economic and cultural concerns of the indigenous communities of Tripura.
On allegations by the CPI(M) that BJP workers prevented its candidates from filing nominations in at least five locations for the upcoming urban local body elections, Debroy dismissed the charges as baseless.
He claimed that the administration and police were prepared to escort opposition candidates to facilitate nomination filing and questioned why the CPI(M) could not field candidates in all the locations despite the arrangements.
Citing Sonamura, Melaghar, Belonia and Udaipur, he said opposition candidates had filed nominations in several areas and accused the CPI(M) of blaming the BJP for its organisational shortcomings.
Beside Debroy the workshop was attended by Speaker Rampada Jamatia, Tribal Welfare Minister Bikash Debbarma, party general secretary Bipin Debbarma, MLA Pramod Reang and other tribal leaders.
