Agartala, Oct 21:Two organisations representing indigenous people of Tripura have lodged police complaints in Agartala against a self-proclaimed content creator, Amir Shokeen, over an allegedly racist video targeting a youth from the state and containing derogatory remarks about Tripura.
The Youth Tipra Federation (YTF) and the TIPRA Indigenous Students’ Federation (TISF) submitted complaints at NCC Police Station in Agartala, urging police to initiate legal action over the video circulated on social media.
According to the complaint filed by TISF, the video, allegedly uploaded on September 19, shows Shokeen making racial remarks and offensive gestures towards an indigenous youth from Tripura during an interaction in Delhi. The complaint alleges that the youth was repeatedly called “Chinese” and that the state’s name was distorted into an obscene expression.
The TISF has sought registration of an FIR under applicable provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and the Information Technology Act, 2000, wherever applicable. It has also urged police to coordinate with cybercrime authorities and the Delhi Police, preserve digital evidence and take appropriate legal action following an investigation.
YTF General Secretary James Debbarma, along with MDCs Prasmit Debbarma, Sujoy Uchoi and other members, condemned the alleged remarks and called for immediate action by the Delhi Police.
Former Tipra Motha chairman Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma also condemned the incident, demanding action against the content creator.
“Amir Shokeen has made fun of our people and even the historic name of Tripura by calling it C#%tpura. If this is not an insult to us, then what is?” he said, calling for a police team to be sent to arrest the accused.
The incident has triggered fresh concerns over alleged racial discrimination faced by people from Northeast India in other parts of the country. Leaders and organisations have stressed that racial stereotyping and regional insults should not be excused as humour or entertainment.
