Agartala, October 4: An earthquake of magnitude 3.8 struck Tripura’s Dhalai district shortly after midnight on Sunday, with tremors felt in parts of the area but no immediate reports of casualties or damage, officials said.
The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) said the earthquake occurred at 12:57:38 am, with its epicentre located at latitude 23.757 degrees North and longitude 91.995 degrees East.
The quake originated at a depth of 30 kilometres, according to the NCS, which shared the information through its official X account.
Residents in parts of Dhalai reported feeling the tremor for a brief period, leading to concern among locals. However, there were no immediate reports of injuries, damage to buildings or disruption of essential services, officials said.
The district administration is monitoring the situation and coordinating with concerned agencies to assess any possible impact, particularly in remote areas.
People have been advised to remain alert and follow safety precautions in case of further tremors or aftershocks.
The earthquake occurred in the seismically active northeastern region, which has recorded tremors of varying intensity over the years.
The NCS is the nodal agency responsible for monitoring seismic activity in India and surrounding regions. It operates a network of seismic stations and routinely issues information on earthquakes detected across the country.
Officials said there was no indication of significant damage from Sunday’s tremor as of the latest assessment.
The administration has urged residents not to panic and to rely on information issued by official agencies instead of unverified messages circulating on social media.
Officials will continue to monitor the situation and assess reports from different parts of the district.
Residents were also advised to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary panic in the event of any further tremors.
The latest earthquake adds to the series of seismic events recorded in the Northeast, a region known for its geological vulnerability.
Authorities have stressed the importance of public awareness and preparedness, particularly in earthquake-prone areas.
Further updates will be issued if any damage, injuries or other significant impact are reported, officials said.
