The Tripura Youth Congress on Wednesday staged a three-hour sit-in demonstration at Orient Chowmuhani in Agartala, protesting what it described as a steep and unexplained increase in electricity bills while accusing the BJP-led government of failing to address public concerns over healthcare, education and rising prices which is a strategy to divert the public attention from the Ram Mandir theft row.
Addressing reporters during the protest, Tripura Youth Congress president Neelkamal Saha alleged that consumers had been burdened with sharply increased electricity bills without prior notice and claimed the state’s health and education sectors were witnessing a steady decline.
Saha also alleged that the BJP was attempting to divert public attention from the reported theft of cash, gold, silver and other valuables from the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya by highlighting other issues.
Claiming that the temple management committee was constituted by organisations linked to the BJP and the RSS, Saha demanded complete transparency into the alleged theft.
He called for the immediate suspension of the temple committee and sought a detailed public disclosure of the value of the stolen donations and the circumstances surrounding the incident.
“The people of the country deserve to know how much donation was allegedly stolen and how such an incident could take place. Those responsible must be held accountable,” he said.
Targeting the BJP government over inflation, Saha alleged that promises made before coming to power to reduce the prices of essential commodities had remained unfulfilled. Instead, he claimed, the prices of daily-use items had continued to rise, placing additional financial pressure on ordinary citizens.
He further criticised the Centre’s handling of economic and international issues, alleging that no effective measures had been taken to curb inflation despite changing global market conditions. Referring to recent international developments, Saha also criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s response to remarks made by US President Donald Trump, claiming the Centre had remained silent.
The Youth Congress leader urged people to hold the government accountable over rising living costs, electricity tariffs and the alleged Ram Mandir theft, while reiterating the party’s demand for immediate action and greater transparency.
