Agartala, June 25: A powerful explosion of unknown origin ripped through a flat in Agartala’s Ramnagar area on Thursday, injuring three persons, one of them seriously, and causing extensive damage to nearby residential buildings. The cause of the blast remains undetermined, with police, fire and Agartala Municipal Corporation officials launching a detailed investigation.
The explosion occurred inside a flat near Ramnagar 4 No. Road, reportedly being used as a mathematics tuition centre and office space. The blast was so intense that it shattered window panes, damaged furniture and household items, and affected adjoining flats and nearby houses.
Emergency services, including police and firefighters, rushed to the spot shortly after the incident and cordoned off the area. The injured were shifted to AGMC and GBP Hospital for treatment. Locals said one of the victims sustained severe burn injuries and remains in a serious condition.
Speaking at the site, Agartala Mayor and local MLA Dipak Majumder said the exact cause of the explosion could not yet be ascertained.
“A blast occurred inside a flat where office-related activities were being carried out. At this moment, nobody is able to say what caused the explosion. The impact was severe and caused damage not only to the affected flat but also to neighbouring flats and houses. The police investigation will determine the cause,” he said.
The Mayor said residents of the locality were left terrified by the incident and many rushed out of their homes after hearing the loud explosion. He noted that several neighbouring families suffered property damage and were still in a state of shock.
Majumder also raised concerns over safety measures in residential buildings and said the Agartala Municipal Corporation would review whether adequate emergency response and rescue mechanisms were in place to deal with such incidents.
“This could have turned into a much more devastating tragedy. We will examine whether proper safety arrangements exist and whether additional measures are required,” he said.
Meanwhile, a local resident claimed that the force of the blast was unusually powerful and suggested that some materials might have been stored inside the flat. However, officials have neither confirmed nor ruled out any possibility.
Police officials said forensic and technical examinations would be conducted as part of the probe. Investigators are collecting evidence from the scene and questioning persons connected with the premises.
As authorities continued their investigation, the cause of the explosion remained a mystery, with officials urging the public not to speculate until the inquiry is completed.
