**Agartala, June 5:** Tribal Welfare Minister Bikash Debbarma has announced the state government’s commitment to transforming the State Sericulture Training Institute at Kalabagan, Champaknagar into a modern and technologically advanced training center capable of meeting future industry demands and generating greater employment opportunities.
During an inspection visit to the institute on Thursday, the Minister reviewed the existing infrastructure, training facilities, and administrative operations. He also held detailed discussions with institute officials regarding its current functioning, challenges, and future development prospects. The visit focused on identifying areas that require modernization and infrastructure enhancement to improve the quality of training and skill development in the sericulture sector.
Speaking to reporters after the inspection, Debbarma emphasized the government’s vision of strengthening the sericulture industry as a means of promoting sustainable livelihoods and economic growth. He said the sector holds immense potential for creating employment opportunities, particularly in rural and tribal areas, and that efforts are underway to improve the institute’s capacity to produce skilled human resources.
“The government is determined to harness the potential of the sericulture sector to boost employment and improve training standards. Plans are underway to upgrade this institute with modern technology and advanced infrastructure,” the Minister said.
Among the major proposals under consideration is the conversion of the institute’s existing conference hall into a smart conference facility equipped with modern digital technology. The upgraded facility is expected to support advanced training programmes, workshops, seminars, and administrative meetings. Plans have also been drawn up for beautification of the main building, infrastructure enhancement, and the addition of modern amenities to create a more conducive learning environment.
Debbarma stated that the ultimate goal is to develop the Kalabagan institute into a state-of-the-art center of excellence for sericulture training in the region. He noted that a stronger sericulture sector would not only improve rural incomes but also encourage entrepreneurship and sustainable economic development.
Experts believe that once the proposed upgrades are implemented, the institute could emerge as one of the most advanced sericulture training centers in Northeast India, playing a crucial role in shaping the future of silk farming and allied industries in the region.
