Agartala, February 16: A retrenched teacher has been arrested in Tripura’s Khowai district on charges of sexually abusing a minor boy, police said on Monday.
The accused, identified as Dulal Shil, is among the 10,323 teachers whose services were terminated following a court ruling in recent years. According to police sources, a case was registered at the Khowai Police Station on February 13 after a complaint was lodged alleging sexual abuse of a minor.
“A written complaint was received alleging that the minor boy had been sexually abused by the accused. Based on the complaint, we registered a case and initiated an investigation,” a police official said.
Following the registration of the case, the accused reportedly went into hiding. Police launched a search operation and tracked him down after a brief manhunt. “He had been absconding for a couple of days. We conducted raids at several locations and ultimately succeeded in arresting him,” the official added.
The accused has been booked under relevant provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, which deals with sexual crimes against minors and prescribes stringent punishment.
After his arrest, Shil was produced before a local court, which will decide on further legal proceedings, including police custody or judicial remand.
Police said the investigation is ongoing and further details would emerge as the probe progresses. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to ensuring swift action in cases involving crimes against children and urged citizens to promptly report any such incidents.
The case has sparked concern in the local community, with residents calling for strict action against the accused in accordance with the law.
