Agartala, February 13: A court in Belonia on Friday sentenced a man to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 after convicting him of murdering his mother-in-law in a case dating back to 2022.
District and Sessions Judge Gobinda Das pronounced the sentence against Satyajoy Tripura for the killing of his mother-in-law, Unati Reang.
According to the prosecution, the incident took place on the night of September 29, 2022, between 1.30 am and 2 am at Ramsundar Para under Baikhora police station. The accused had been staying at his in-laws’ residence at the time. It was alleged that he strangled the victim to death while she was asleep. Police stated that the accused was in an inebriated condition when the crime was committed.
Following the incident, a case was registered at Baikhora Women Police Station under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code. An investigation was subsequently launched to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the murder.
After completing the probe, the investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Ruma Noatia, submitted a chargesheet before the court, citing 14 witnesses in support of the prosecution’s case. During the trial, the court examined the statements of 13 witnesses.
Upon evaluating the evidence and testimonies presented, the court found the accused guilty of murder. Judge Das awarded life imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 10,000. The case was prosecuted on behalf of the state by Public Prosecutor Subrata Chakraborty, officials said.
