Agartala, January 23:A tragic road accident claimed the life of a six-year-old child on Saraswati Puja morning in the Sidhai area of West Tripura district on Friday, police said.
According to Officer-in-Charge of Sidhai police station, Ajit Kanti Chakma, the incident occurred at Bijoynagar early in the morning. Acting on information received, a police team rushed to the spot.
Preliminary investigation revealed that a truck, coming from the Sidhai side towards Mohanpur, hit the minor while he was on the road.
The child sustained severe head injuries and was immediately shifted to the Mohanpur Primary Health Centre, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.
The deceased has been identified as Alankit Sarkar, son of Sribash Sarkar.
Following the incident, angry locals allegedly set the offending vehicle — bearing registration number TR 03 B 1912 — on fire. The truck driver fled the scene after the accident.
Police said efforts are underway to trace and detain the driver, and a detailed investigation into the incident is in progress.
