Agartala, December 15:
In a major crackdown on drug trafficking, Tripura Police of North District achieved a significant breakthrough on Monday by seizing a huge consignment of contraband drugs worth approximately Rs 2.5 crore from the area adjoining Dharmanagar Railway Station and arresting three women in connection with the case.
Acting on specific intelligence inputs, a team from Dharmanagar Police Station conducted a well-coordinated operation in the afternoon, leading to the recovery of 44,000 Yaba tablets. The seizure marks one of the major recoveries of synthetic drugs in North Tripura in recent times.
Confirming the development, North Tripura district Superintendent of Police Avinash Rai said the successful operation was carried out following credible information.
“A total of 44,000 Yaba tablets were recovered and three women have been arrested. The estimated black-market value of the seized tablets is around Rs 2.5 crore,” the SP said.
The arrested accused have been identified as Mafia Begum (45), a resident of Hospital Road area under Sonamura Police Station in Sepahijala district; Ankuri Bibi (40), a resident of Silghati under Kakraban Police Station in Gomati district; and Hafia Begum (55), also from the Kakraban Police Station area in Gomati district.
Preliminary investigation suggests that the accused were allegedly transporting the Yaba tablets by a Silchar–Agartala passenger train, using the railway route to smuggle the contraband into the state.
Following the seizure, the accused were taken to Dharmanagar Police Station, where they are currently being interrogated intensively. Police officials said further investigation is underway to identify and trace other members of the interstate drug trafficking network involved in the racket.
The operation was conducted in the presence of Sub-Divisional Police Officer Jayata Karmakar, Officer-in-Charge of Dharmanagar Police Station Meena Debbarma, the DCM, and other personnel from the security forces, who played a crucial role in the successful seizure.
