Agartala, June 2:
Senior Congress MLA and former Minister Sudip Roy Barman on Monday launched a scathing attack on Tipra Motha, dismissing the youth wing YTF’s protest against Gomati District Magistrate Tarit Kanti Chakma and the government as a mere “drama” aimed at misleading the public.
Reacting to the agitation in Udaipur, where YTF supporters reportedly locked the gates of the DM office complex as protest beside demanding action by the government against the said DM for allegedly misbehaving with Tipra Motha founder and royal scion Pradyot Kishore Debbarma, Roy Barman said, “What should I say, this is just to show. Together you live as a family and also fight, destroy properties and lock the offices — all this is simply to mislead common people.”
Speaking at a press conference in Agartala, the Congress leader said the protest lacked any real public interest issue and instead sought to manipulate public emotions. “When you do not have any concrete public-related issue, you just exploit the emotions and sentiments of innocent minds. That’s what I can say,” he added.
Tipra Motha, which once served as the principal opposition party in Tripura, is now a part of the BJP-IPFT alliance.
In response to the recent episode involving the Gomati DM and Pradyot Kishore, Chief Minister Manik Saha stated that he had personally spoken to Pradyot about the matter and subsequently directed the Chief Secretary to submit an official investigation report. However, the Tipra Motha youth wing, YTF, has alleged that even after more than a week, no action has been taken against the DM, fueling their continued protest.
It maybe added that the Congress had earlier condemned the alleged misbehavior by DM Tarit Kanti Chakma with Pradyot Kishore, but Roy Barman’s remarks on Monday signal a shift in tone, suggesting that the ongoing protests may be politically motivated rather than driven by genuine grievance.
