Agartala, May 21: Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on Wednesday asserted that the state government will not allow illegal immigrants from Bangladesh or Myanmar to enter Tripura under any circumstances.
He further stated that if such individuals manage to enter the state, they will be pushbacked as per legal provisions.
The Chief Minister made the remarks while speaking to reporters in Agartala on the sidelines of a government programme at Pragna Bhavan, where appointment letters were handed over to newly selected Inspectors of Food.
Saha’s statement comes two days after the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) issued a directive to all states and Union Territories, giving them a 30-day deadline to invoke their statutory powers to verify the credentials of suspected illegal immigrants who claim to be Indian citizens and to proceed with their deportation if found ineligible.
“We are very clear on this. No Bangladeshi or Rohingya will be allowed to enter Tripura. If anyone does manage to infiltrate, they will be pushbacked in accordance with the law,” Dr. Saha stated, reiterating the state’s firm stance on border security and illegal immigration.
Tripura shares a long international 856 Km border with Bangladesh, making it particularly sensitive to cross-border migration issues.
