Agartala, May 20: Tripura Chief Minister **Prof. Dr. Manik Saha** on Monday visited the grieving family of two children who tragically drowned in the Chanmari area of Agartala. The incident, which occurred on Sunday, has deeply shocked the local community.
The Chief Minister met the parents and relatives of the deceased siblings—**Prasenjit Debnath (11)** and **Priyanka Debnath (7)**—at their ancestral home in **Jirania**. The children, who had gone out to play near a water-filled pit in Chanmari, accidentally drowned in an attempt to save each other.
Speaking to the media, Dr. Saha explained that the pit had been dug for personal use and was filled with rainwater and submersible water. The children, unaware of the danger, often played near the spot. “It was a heartbreaking incident. After receiving the news, I immediately directed the District Magistrate to conduct an inquiry. The SDM visited the site, reviewed CCTV footage, and submitted a preliminary report,” he said.
Dr. Saha met the father, **Krishna Debnath**, a daily-wage labourer, and offered his condolences. He also handed over **Rs 8 lakh** in financial assistance on behalf of the **state government** and the **Disaster Management Department**.
The Chief Minister further assured that the government would consider additional support for the family’s **eldest daughter**, who is currently studying in **Class 12**. “Local MLA and Minister Sushanta Chowdhury will take necessary steps in this regard,” he added.
Accompanying the Chief Minister were **Tourism and Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury**, **West Tripura District Magistrate Dr. Vishal Kumar**, and other senior officials, all of whom expressed solidarity with the bereaved family during this moment of profound grief.
