Agartala, December 25: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha has accused the Congress of disrespecting Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and demanded an apology from the party amid ongoing protests over Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s remarks on the architect of the Indian Constitution.
Addressing a press conference at the BJP state office in Agartala on Wednesday evening, Saha, accompanied by Rajya Sabha MP and BJP state president Rajib Bhattacharjee, alleged that Congress has historically dishonored Ambedkar and is now using his legacy to gain political mileage.
“Congress has always been anti-Ambedkar. It is now pretending to support him only to mislead the public and exploit sentiments,” said Saha.
Recalling Ambedkar’s resignation from the central council of ministers, Saha criticized Congress for not allowing him to speak in Parliament after he condemned then-Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s approach to minority rights while ignoring the scheduled castes.
Despite Ambedkar’s role as the chief architect of the Constitution, Congress neither honored him with awards nor acknowledged his contributions, Saha claimed.
He credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government for giving due recognition to Ambedkar’s ideology and for preserving sites associated with his legacy as historical landmarks.
“Today, Congress is pretending to respect Ambedkar only to fool people. The BJP will expose their hypocrisy and ensure the public knows the truth,” Saha added.
During the press conference, Saha also highlighted outcomes of the recently concluded 72nd Plenary Session of the North Eastern Council and discussed the situation in neighboring Bangladesh.
