Agartala: Dec 11: The Tipra Students’ Federation (TSF) organized a protest today at the Gandhi statue near the Circuit House, demanding the repeal of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
A leader of the organization stated that the CAA was passed in Parliament on December 11, 2019, the same day as today. The TSF had opposed the law when it was first introduced, and despite their protests, it was passed. The organization declared December 11 as a “Black Day” in Tripura and the entire Northeast, marking the anniversary of the law’s passage. Every year on this day, TSF holds protests to express their opposition to the CAA.
The primary demand of the protestors is the immediate repeal of the Citizenship Amendment Act. They argue that the law discriminates against certain religious communities and could negatively affect the cultural and demographic makeup of the region. The protestors are calling for the government to reconsider the law and to address their concerns regarding its impact on the indigenous people of the Northeast.
The TSF’s protest is part of a broader movement in the region against the CAA, reflecting deep opposition to what they perceive as an unjust and discriminatory policy.
