Agartala: August 11: A tragic incident occurred on Thursday in the Udaypur Poultry Road area, where a teacher, Abhijit De, was allegedly beaten to death by a ruling party leader and his associates following a false accusation. The injured teacher was brought to the police station that night, but despite his severe injuries, no medical treatment was arranged. When produced in court on Friday, Abhijit De collapsed and began vomiting blood. He was then taken to Gomati District Hospital and subsequently referred to GB Hospital, where he died on Saturday afternoon.
Reports indicate that despite multiple injury marks on his body, the GB Hospital authorities released the body without conducting a post-mortem, allegedly due to political intervention. The family of the deceased teacher brought the body back to Gomati District Hospital, where it is currently in the morgue awaiting a post-mortem on Sunday.
The wife of the deceased teacher alleged that her husband was first beaten at Shankar Karmakar’s house on Poultry Road and then again in front of her. It is claimed that the teacher had made obscene remarks to a female student, though his wife is unsure if there is any proof of this. She also mentioned that Shankar Karmakar had gathered a large number of people beforehand.
Abhijit De, a government English teacher with a long-standing reputation as a private tutor, had no prior allegations of misconduct. His wife, also a government teacher, expressed that if her husband was guilty, he should have been handed over to the police. Locals have expressed frustration with Shankar Karmakar’s behavior and are demanding strict punishment, including the death penalty.
There is significant resentment towards the police for not providing immediate medical assistance and for their perceived influence by the ruling party leader. The community is calling for a thorough investigation into the incident and for those responsible to be held accountable.
