**Agartala, October 1:** Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Thursday paid homage to legendary musician Kumar Sachin Dev Burman on his birth anniversary, describing him as the “face of Tripura” and recalling his contribution to the country’s musical and cultural heritage.
Saha was speaking at a commemorative programme organised at Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhavan to mark the birth anniversary of the renowned composer and singer.
The chief minister said Burman’s music had transcended geographical boundaries and continued to hold a place in Indian culture. He said the artiste’s achievements remained a source of pride for the people of Tripura.
Saha also noted the significance of the venue, saying it had once been associated with Burman’s residence.
Recalling Burman’s journey from royalty to a distinguished career in music, Saha said he chose to move beyond his royal background and establish his own identity through dedication and artistic ability.
“It is not enough to simply remember him. We must honour him by keeping his creations alive and carrying forward his legacy,” Saha said.
Sachin Dev Burman was born on October 1, 1906, at Chartha in Comilla, then under the Kingdom of Tripura. He belonged to the Manikya dynasty and received his initial musical training from his father, Nabadwip Chandra Dev Burman, a noted sitar player.
Saha said Burman’s music incorporated folk traditions and classical influences and was shaped by his connection with rural Bengal, its rivers and the lives of common people.
Burman established himself in Bengali music before making a lasting mark in Hindi cinema. He was also associated with All India Radio and Hindustan Records. His work included films such as “Devdas”, “Guide”, “Jewel Thief” and “Abhimaan”.
His son Rahul Dev Burman, popularly known as Pancham, later became one of the leading composers of Hindi cinema, continuing the family’s contribution to Indian music.
