Agartala, May 1:Hundreds of devotees congregated at the historic Venuvan Buddha Vihar on Friday to mark the 2570th Buddha Purnima, with solemn prayers, candlelight offerings and a renewed call for global peace and harmony.
Devotees from Tripura’s Mog, Chakma, Barua and Uchoi communities gathered in large numbers, offering prayers and reflecting on the message of non-violence and universal brotherhood.
Buddha Purnima commemorates the birth, enlightenment and Mahaparinirvana of Lord Buddha — a rare confluence that elevates its spiritual significance.
Extending his greetings, Vante Khemachara Bhikkhu, chief monk of Venuvan Vihar, underscored the enduring relevance of the teachings of Gautama Buddha, stressing unity, inclusiveness and compassion. “Best wishes to everyone on Buddha Purnima. May all be well and blessed,” he said while addressing reporters on the sidelines of the celebrations.
Highlighting the historical legacy of the Vihar, the monk noted that it was established before India’s Independence under the patronage of Tripura’s former ruler Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya, describing it as a symbol of pride for the state.
He also emphasized the inclusive ethos of the occasion, where people from diverse communities, languages and faiths participate without distinction.
The celebrations began a day earlier with food distribution among patients and children’s competitions, including quizzes. On Friday, rituals commenced with morning processions, followed by Sanghadan and Buddha Puja.
The Governor is expected to attend the evening programme, along with a member of the Manikya royal family, invited in recognition of their historical association with the Vihar.
The observance in Agartala once again highlighted the timeless appeal of Buddha’s teachings, with calls for peace, compassion and meaningful living resonating throughout the day.
