Agartala, January 2: Former Chief Minister and CPIM politburo member Manik Sarkar has called upon party leaders and cadres to capitalize on growing public disillusionment with the BJP-led government in Tripura.
Addressing the State Level Convention of the Tripura SC Coordination Committee at Agartala Town Hall, Sarkar emphasized the need for grassroots mobilization to address common people’s issues and counter the ruling party’s unfulfilled promises.
Sarkar criticized the BJP for failing to deliver on key promises made during the 2018 assembly elections, including implementing the 7th Central Pay Commission for government employees and filling 50,000 vacant government posts as first cabinet decision after establishing of the BJP government.
Sarkar also attacked PM Modi and HM Amit Shah alleging that then they promises to make special provisions for Tripura and doubling the annual work days to 200 under MGNREGA and increasing the daily mendays to Rs 332.
He highlighted that, contrary to these assurances, the number of annual workdays under MGNREGA in Tripura has decreased to 30-32 days, with wages delayed by three months and subject to deductions by local BJP leaders as cut money.
The former Chief Minister noted that citizens are increasingly recognizing these shortcomings but face intimidation when voicing dissent.
He urged CPIM leaders and cadres to actively engage with the populace, protest against injustices, and work towards regime change, stating that passive hope is insufficient for progress.
The convention also featured ex-MP and CPIM politburo member Ram Chandra Dome, who condemned Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s recent remarks about Dr. B.R. Ambedkar as disrespectful.
Dome accused the BJP of pursuing divisive politics to distract from substantive issues and called for mass mobilization to defend social, political, and economic rights against what he described as a fascist agenda aiming to replace the Constitution with Manusmriti.
These statements align with nationwide protests by Left parties demanding Shah’s resignation over his comments on Dr. Ambedkar, which they perceive as an attack on the core values of Indian democracy and the Constitution.
The CPIM’s renewed call to action reflects a strategic effort to regain public support by addressing grievances stemming from the BJP’s unmet electoral promises and alleged anti-people policies.
