Agartala: Dec 27: Once again, a theft occurred at the century-old Mata Daityeshwari Kali Temple in Sabroom. The incident took place on Thursday night. The police, after registering a case, arrested two individuals in civilian clothes, while another thief managed to escape. Gold ornaments and cash were recovered from the arrested individuals.
According to the details, on Friday morning, the temple priest arrived to find the temple door broken. He immediately informed the Sabroom Police Station. Upon reaching the site, the police found that the gold ornaments of Mata Daityeshwari were missing. The temple management committee reported that more than 25 tolas of gold ornaments, several silver items, and approximately 20,000 rupees in cash had been stolen.
The Sabroom Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) stated that, upon receiving the theft report, the police reviewed the CCTV footage and identified three suspects. A special team was formed to track down the thieves, and they were cornered at a location. While two of the thieves were apprehended, the third managed to flee with a bike. The arrested individuals were identified as Sajal, a resident of Sabroom Namapara, and Chentu Tripura, a resident of Ghorakappa. The police, despite pursuing the fleeing thief, could not catch him.
From the two arrested thieves, the police recovered the stolen gold ornaments and cash. Further questioning led to the discovery of additional gold ornaments in a forest near Sabroom Higher Secondary School. A total of 7,840 rupees and seven tolas of gold were recovered. The police assured that the remaining stolen items would be recovered soon.
It is worth mentioning that the safety of the gold ornaments at the Daityeshwari Temple has been questioned many times before. The public had urged the temple management committee to either place the ornaments under the custody of the Sub-Divisional Officer or in a bank locker. However, for unknown reasons, the ornaments were left unsecured in the temple. Following this theft, the police have filed a case and identified three notorious thieves in the CCTV footage, though they have not yet been arrested.
