Agartala: Dec 09: Recently, a peace accord was signed between the state, central government, and various insurgent groups, leading to the surrender of many insurgents who returned to normal life. However, some former insurgents have continued their anti-social activities, as evidenced by the recent arrest of Shankar Debbarma, a former member of the NLFT (National Liberation Front of Tripura) insurgent group. Despite surrendering and returning to civilian life, Shankar was apprehended by the Jirania police on charges of carrying sharp weapons and a country-made gun.
The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon in Champaknagar, where Shankar Debbarma attacked Sushil Debbarma, a local villager, with the intention to kill him. Shankar, who had gone to collect money from workers repairing an old bridge in the village, was confronted by Sushil Debbarma. The confrontation escalated, and Shankar attacked Sushil with a sharp weapon, leaving him seriously injured. Thanks to quick action from the villagers, Sushil survived the attack. He was initially taken to Champaknagar Hospital and later transferred to GB Hospital in Agartala for further treatment. Sushil Debbarma subsequently filed a complaint at the Champaknagar outpost on Sunday night.
Upon receiving the complaint, the Jirania police arrested Shankar from his residence in Balaram Thakurpara. A search of his home led to the recovery of a sharp sword and a country-made gun. The police have registered a case against him under the Arms Act. The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Jirania police station informed the media about the incident, adding that Shankar Debbarma had been involved in anti-social activities in the area for some time. Villagers have also raised concerns, suggesting that he may possess additional firearms and sharp weapons, which have not yet been recovered. On Monday, Shankar Debbarma was produced in court, and the police sought his remand for further investigation.
