Agartala: Dec 03: Widespread protests have erupted across Tripura following reports of the persecution of Hindus in Bangladesh and the arrest of Chinmoy Prabhu, a figure linked to the issue. The protests have sparked significant tension, particularly in Agartala, where demonstrators have expressed their anger over the ongoing situation in Bangladesh. These protests have escalated into acts of vandalism, including an attack on the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Agartala. Protesters reportedly damaged property and burned the Bangladeshi national flag, leading to a strong police response.
In response to the growing unrest, the police arrested seven individuals involved in the vandalism. The arrests took place late last night, and a specific case has been filed against the accused. The West Tripura District Superintendent of Police, Kiran Kumar, confirmed that the arrested individuals would be presented in court today with a request for remand. The police are continuing to investigate, and further interrogations could reveal the involvement of more individuals.
Amidst these tensions, an organization in Tripura had sought permission from the administration to organize a ‘March to Bangladesh’ protest today. However, the authorities denied the request, anticipating further unrest. In light of the situation, the administration has taken precautionary measures by erecting two bamboo barricades on Akhaura Road, a critical area near the India-Bangladesh border.
Despite the tensions, daily trade between India and Bangladesh continues without disruption. Debashish Nandi, Manager of the Agartala Integrated Checkpost, assured that import and export activities remain normal, underscoring that the security measures in place have not impacted the movement of goods across the border. The situation remains fluid, and authorities are closely monitoring developments in the region.
