Agartala, September 28: In a significant breakthrough in its ongoing battle against drug trafficking, the East Agartala police, in collaboration with the College Tilla police outpost, made a major seizure on Saturday.
Acting on specific intelligence, police intercepted a 12-wheeler truck registered in Nagaland, uncovering a hidden chamber containing a large quantity of ganja.
Superintendent of Police (SP) for West Tripura district, Dr. Kiran Kumar in presence of SDPO Sadar Deba Prasad Roy and Officer-in-Charge of East Agartala police station Rana Chatterjee, briefed reporters on the operation.
He explained that police had received credible information about contraband being smuggled in the truck. Acting swiftly, officers detained the vehicle at a police checkpoint. Although the truck appeared empty, a secret compartment had been constructed within the vehicle, designed specifically to conceal illicit goods.
“With the help of a mechanic, the hidden chamber was opened, revealing 45 packets of dry ganja weighing 355 kilograms,” SP Dr. Kumar stated. The estimated market value of the seized ganja is around ₹75 lakh.
The truck driver, identified as 33-year-old Mithun Karmakar, was immediately arrested.
During preliminary interrogation, Karmakar revealed that he was transporting the consignment to Meghalaya.
However, Dr. Kumar emphasized that further investigation is required to corroborate the driver’s statements and uncover more details about the smuggling operation.
“We are seeking the driver’s remand (from the court) for further interrogation. Our goal is to identify the origin of the contraband, the individuals involved in its supply, and those responsible for receiving it at the destination,” the SP added.
This successful operation is part of a broader effort by Tripura police to clamp down on drug trafficking networks operating through the state. The authorities have been stepping up surveillance and intensifying their crackdown on drug smuggling, which has become a growing concern in the region.
The SP concluded by reaffirming the police’s commitment to fighting the drug menace, stating that efforts will continue to ensure those involved in such illegal activities are brought to justice.
This latest bust is a testament to the police’s vigilance and determination in their ongoing war against drugs, further reinforcing their efforts to curb narcotics smuggling through the northeastern state.
