Agartala, September 23:
Alleging a rapid deterioration in law and order due to police inaction and bias under the ruling BJP, the Tripura Pradesh Congress took to the streets of Agartala on Monday.
The protest culminated in the gherao of the Tripura Police headquarters as the Congress intensified its attack on the state government.
The Congress accused the police of being reduced to a “puppet” under the BJP’s influence, failing to maintain impartiality and allowing the administration to shield those in power.
In addition to charges of police inaction, Congress leaders made strong accusations of widespread corruption within the government.
They claimed that key figures, including Ministers, BJP leaders, and even members of the Chief Minister’s Office, were complicit in unethical practices and graft.
With banners and posters in hand, Congress workers marched through the streets of Agartala, vocally demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Manik Saha, who also holds the Home Ministry portfolio.
The protesters blamed him for the police’s failure to enforce the law and for the collapse of governance in the state.
Senior Congress leaders, including MLA Sudip Roy Barman, Tripura in-charge and All India Congress Committee (AICC) Secretary Christopher Tilak, MLA Gopal Chandra Roy, MLA Birajit Sinha, and state Congress president Asish Kumar Saha, led the demonstration.
The protest procession began from the Agartala Press Club and made its way to the Tripura Police headquarters.
Upon reaching the Police Headquarters, the protesters faced heavy security deployment and barricades meant to prevent them from advancing further.
Despite the police presence, tensions remained high as Congress workers continued to voice their demands for government accountability and action against corruption.
Following the protest, a seven-member Congress delegation, accompanied by Superintendent of Police Dr. Kiren Kumar, met with the Director General of Police (DGP) to submit a memorandum outlining their grievances.
The memorandum called for immediate action to address the alleged breakdown in law and order and demanded an impartial investigation into the corruption claims against the ruling government.
The protest is part of a larger campaign by the Congress to challenge the BJP-led state government, with growing public discontent over governance issues. Congress leaders warned of further protests if their demands are not met.
