Belonia:Sept 22: An incident occurred in the Belonia Mora Pokurpar area where four men, allegedly from another state, attempted to molest a minor girl. The timely intervention of local residents allowed the girl to escape. While one of the accused fled, the other three were apprehended by locals and handed over to the police.
According to the complaint filed by the girl’s family at the Belonia Women’s Police Station, Idu Sheikh and Bablu Sheikh were the primary perpetrators. It is alleged that these four men, including Rustam Sheikh and Manir Hossain, had been harassing and attempting to molest young girls in the area for some time. The locals had been tolerating this behavior out of fear of social stigma.
The incident took place when the 12-year-old girl was bathing in a pond. Idu Sheikh and Bablu Sheikh allegedly tried to drag her into the water. Her screams alerted local residents, who rushed to her rescue and apprehended Idu and Bablu. They then went to the rented house where Rustam and Manir were staying but managed to catch only Rustam and Bablu, as Manir escaped.
The accused, all from Kolkata and Murshidabad, had been working as masons in the Belonia Mora Pokurpar area for the past two years. Local residents reported that due to the constant harassment by these men, the girls in the area were afraid to leave their homes. Finally, the residents decided to take action and handed the three accused over to the police.
