Agartala, August 16: The opposition Congress in Tripura has alleged that attacks on its supporters by ruling BJP is continuing even after the conclusion of the three-tier Panchayat elections, with the incidents reportedly occurring in front of police, who remain passive.
On Friday, Tripura Congress chief Asish Kumar Saha, accompanied by SDPO Amtali and the officer-in-charge of AD Nagar police station, visited the home of retired police constable Kuldip Bahadur at AD Nagar, Baganbari, on the outskirts of Agartala.
The house, belonging to Bahadur—whose brother is a known Congress leader—was allegedly attacked and ransacked the previous night by BJP supporters in the presence of police.
The victim’s wife claimed that local councilor Alok Ray, along with a group of ruling party hooligans, led the attack after her son refused to withdraw a police complaint he had lodged at the AD Nagar police station following a previous assault on him.
She recounted that the councilor had on the day earlier visited their house, urging them to settle the matter and withdraw the case. Upon their refusal, he allegedly threatened them.
The woman further alleged that the attack unfolded in the presence of police personnel, to whom she pleaded for help. However, the officer on the scene reportedly responded that they were outnumbered and unable to intervene.
Congress chief Asish Kumar Saha, a former MLA, also met with SP West district Kiren Kumar, raising the issue in the presence of the victim’s family members.
He demanded the immediate arrest of those responsible for the attack and called for security measures to protect the family, who are reportedly being pressured to leave the area.
