Agartala: August 10: Pradyot Manikya Deb Barma, the former chairman of Tipra Motha in Tripura, has voiced significant concerns regarding the security and stability of the Northeast region. Speaking at the first conference of the Autonomous Councils under the 6th Schedule of the Indian Constitution in Shillong, Deb Barma emphasized issues related to infiltration and the volatile situation in Bangladesh. He highlighted the open border with Bangladesh as a critical threat, noting that India’s strategy on Bangladesh, historically based on the family of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, is now outdated. He urged that India’s priority should be to protect its own citizens rather than providing asylum to people crossing over from Bangladesh. Deb Barma called for a focus on providing land rights, economic powers, political freedom, and constitutional protection for the indigenous people of the region.
During the conference, Deb Barma announced the formation of a committee led by Pyniaid Sing Syiem, the chief convenor of all 10 Autonomous District Councils (ADCs) and Territorial Councils in the Northeast. He underscored the importance of mutual respect among the councils and mentioned the establishment of the Tirot Sing Memorial School in North Tripura. Additionally, land has been allocated to the three district councils in Meghalaya for constructing a Bhawan in Tripura. The conference saw participation from representatives of various district councils across the region.
