Agartala: July 07: Sudip Roy Barman, Congress AICC member and former Health Minister, has raised alarm over the HIV situation in Tripura, revealing that 47 students have died from the infection and 828 have tested positive.
Roy Barman described this as “only the tip of the iceberg,” suggesting that the true extent of the crisis is far greater and of serious concern.
Barman attributed the rise in HIV cases to increased drug users among youth, particularly intravenous drug users who share syringes.
The BJP Minister tumed Congress MLA alleged that after BJP came to power in the state drug trafficking activities has increased and regarding which he had alerted but no action was taken.
He alleged that some BJP leaders are involved with or financially benefiting from drug traffickers, leading to police inaction.
Similar concerns were echoed by Pabitra Kar, former Deputy Speaker and CPIM senior leader.
Kar acknowledged that while drug traffickers were dealt with firmly during the Left Front regime, the BJP has turned Tripura into a Paradise for drug trafficking and India’s corridor and a hub for marijuana production.
He noted that ganja production, previously was confined to few hilly bordering areas, has now spread not only to the plains but even to the outskirts of capital Agartala and police is silent spectator.
