Agartala, July 5: A total of 23 Rohingyas who had illegally entered Tripura from Bangladesh were arrested by police in North Tripura last night at two locations near the Assam border.
In the first incident, North Tripura district police apprehended 16 Rohingyas, including children and women, at Dharmanagar ISBT on Thursday night based on secret information, said Devi Prasad Roy, Officer-in-Charge of Dharmanagar police station.
Roy stated that all detainees would be produced before the court on Friday.
In a separate incident in the same district, Churaibari police station personnel, during a routine bus check, arrested seven Rohingyas, including three women and two children.
The bus had a registration number of ML-05-T-8382.
Konkan Shah, OC of Churaibari police station, reported that the detainees revealed they had been living in a Rohingya camp in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, and had crossed the border intending to travel to Hyderabad, where they had previously resided.
Both cases are under investigation and the detainees have been charged under the BNS, Passport Act, and Foreigner’s Act.
