Agartala, May 4: Amidst the scorching heat wave sweeping through Tripura and other regions, Sepahijala Zoological Park in Sepahijala district has taken proactive measures to safeguard the well-being of its inhabitants.
The management has introduced various initiatives aimed at alleviating the effects of the heat wave on the animals.
These initiatives include providing electrolyte-rich fluids, installing air coolers and cooling shades, sprinkling cool water, beside offering frozen treats infused with fruits and vegetables kept in ice.
To combat dehydration and heat stress, seasonal fruits such as watermelons, cucumbers, and gourds are being offered to the animals.
Additionally, ice cubes and cold-water splashes are being utilized directly to lower body temperatures.
Shades have been erected in all enclosures, with air coolers installed in select cages to maintain a comfortable environment for the animals.
The zoo veterinarian conducts regular monitoring and administers ORS and other substances to prevent dehydration.
Furthermore, the zoo staff ensures fresh and cool water is readily available by frequently changing water levels in the enclosures.
Herbivores and omnivores are provided with easily digestible, high-moisture frozen treats containing seasonal fruits during cooler times of the day.
Innovative methods such as pools, ice, and enrichment games are being employed to help lower body temperatures and provide mental stimulation for the animals.
These proactive measures underscore the Sepahijala zoo’s commitment to ensuring the safety and comfort of its captive animals amidst the challenging conditions posed by the heat wave.
