Agartala, November 18: As part of their statewide agitation, members of the All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) staged a protest in front of the Agartala Municipal Corporation, advocating for increased mendays and wages in MGNREGA and TUEP.
The demonstrators pressed for a raise in MGNREGA daily wages to Rs 600 and an extension of the annual work allotment to 300 days. Similarly, for urban areas covered by TUEP, they called for an increase in daily wages to Rs 340 and the annual work allotment to 200 days.
The protesters expressed concern over a significant reduction in annual work days under MGNREGA and TUEP, citing rampant corruption in the blocks and irregular payment of wages to impoverished workers. Additionally, they highlighted the denial of social pension benefits to thousands of deserving individuals during a supposed review process.
Accusations were also made regarding the unfair distribution of benefits within Self Help Groups, alleging that only members affiliated with the ruling party were granted privileges, while genuine members were unjustly denied their entitlements.
