Agartala, September 5: The present government of the state has taken the initiative to reopen the Kailashahar airport which has been abandoned for many years. Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury met with high-level representatives of the Airports Authority of India at the Secretariat today.
It was known that a high-level delegation of the Airport Authority of India, an organization under the Ministry of Civil Aviation of India, visited the Kailashahar Airport yesterday. The delegation included officers of operation experts and technical team. A total of eleven representatives including three from Delhi, three from Guwahati and five from Agartala visited the Kailashahar airport yesterday.
It is reported that Spice Jet and Alliance Air are ready to offer flight services from Kailashahar. However, due to the lack of small aircraft of Spice Jet, it is known that the small aircraft of Alliance Air will operate on this route, as it is not possible to fly large aircraft at Kailashahar airport.
According to sources, the re-opening of the abandoned Kailashahar airport will take place in two phases. In the first phase, the existing runway will be rehabilitated to accommodate small aircraft. The Airports Authority of India plans to expand the airport to build a state-of-the-art airport with large runways for landing large aircraft in the second phase. Officials of the Airport Authority of India will visit Kailasahar to visit the airport several more times in connection with the renovation and re-opening of the existing airport.
