Agartala, July 29: Muslims in Agartala marked the occasion of Muharram by participating in a solemn procession called ‘Sahid Karbala Smaran’ to mourn the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad and son of Hazrat Ali.
The procession commenced from the bordering South Ramnagar area and proceeded through the streets, drawing a large number of participants from the Islamic faith.
Muharram holds immense significance in the Islamic faith as it marks the first month of the year on their calendar.
Known as Al Hijri or the Arabic New Year, the first day of Muharram follows the lunar calendar in Islam.
Muslims worldwide join in mourning the martyrdom of Imam Hussain during these ten days leading up to ‘Ashura,’ when the entire community comes together to participate in mourning marches.
