Agartala, June 28:
In a state-level seminar on Fixation on Celling Price under the National List of Essential Medicines (NLEM) 2022, Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha highlighted the alarming situation of drug trafficking in the region.
He stated that Tripura is being utilized as a corridor for drug smuggling, with drugs entering from Myanmar via Assam and being smuggled further to Bangladesh.
During the seminar held at Pragna Bhavan, the Chief Minister emphasized that Ministers from Bangladesh who met him have expressed their concerns about this issue and also acknowledged the efforts made by the Tripura government to combat drug trafficking.
He declared that Tripura ranks second among the northeastern states of India in terms of seizing and destroying drugs.
Dr. Saha further mentioned that the Union Home Minister, Amit Shah, has taken the matter seriously and firmly stated that India follows a policy of zero tolerance for drugs.
Shah had emphasized that Indian soil will not be allowed to be used for illicit drug trade under any circumstances and agencies should act ruthlessly against drug traffickers.
Since the BJP-led government assumed power in Tripura in 2018, significant strides have been made in combating drug-related crimes.
The state has witnessed the largest-ever seizures of marijuana, along with the apprehension of numerous drug traffickers and the confiscation of approximately 700 vehicles involved in drug peddling. Additionally, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been established to specifically investigate the drug menace.
In his speech, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha reiterated the government’s commitment to address the issue of drug trafficking and emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts to ensure a drug-free society in Tripura.
