Agartala, June 27 :TIPRA Motha party’s core committee, including founder Pradyot Kishore recently had a virtual meeting and expressed dissatisfaction with the progress of the tripartite agreement and threated that the party plans to review its alliance with ruling BJP.
On Thursday top leaders of the party announced their concerns and future plans during an urgent press conference at the residence of Motha president Bijoy Kumar Hrangkhawl. The press conference also included former Minister Mebar Kumar Jamatia and former MLA Rajeshwar Debbarma.
The tripartite agreement, signed a few months ago in New Delhi in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, aimed to address TIPRA Motha’s core demand for a separate tribal state, Greater Tipraland.
It focused on providing socio-cultural, economic, and political rights to the indigenous population and for their development.
This agreement, considered politically significant, marked TIPRA Motha’s transition from the main opposition party in the BJP-led government in Tripura to an NDA partner with two Ministers in the cabinet.
TIPRA Motha leaders who met the State Election Commissioner today demanded for clubbing the long-pending TTAADC village council elections and the by-election for two vacant council seats with the Panchayat Poll likely to take place in coming August.
This decision, they emphasized, hinges on the state government’s stance. They threatened to reassess their alliance with the BJP if the state government plays a negative role in supporting their demands.
The delegation of Motha leaders those who met State Election Commissioner Saradindu Chowdhury and submitted a memorandum demanding the by-elections for the two vacant seats in the TTAADC and the village council elections, whose tenure expired over two years ago, to be conducted alongside the upcoming Panchayat elections in August.
They said that initially, the State Election Commission indicated that TTAADC elections could only occur four months after the Panchayat polls. However, after persistent demands from Motha leaders, the SEC agreed to write to the state government for its opinion, which will influence the final decision.
TIPRA Motha stated they would await the state government’s response regarding the TTAADC elections, which will determine the future of their alliance with the BJP-led NDA.
They also hinted at the possibility of contesting the Panchayat polls independently, outside the NDA alliance.
