Agartala, May 11: Smriti Rekha Chakma, the esteemed recipient of the Padma Shri award, arrived in the state to a heartfelt reception. Family members and dignitaries gathered at Agartala airport to extend their warm greetings.
On May 9, Smritirekha Chakma (63), a native of the state, was honored with the prestigious Padma Shri by President Draupadi Murmu. Her remarkable contributions to the textile industry earned her this distinction. Her passion for the craft led her to establish the social and cultural institution, Uzia Jadha, where she imparts weaving skills to rural women.
As a child, Smriti Rekha Chakma observed her grandmother weaving loincloths using the traditional Naga method. Now, she continues this legacy by training the younger generation in the art of weaving.
