Agartala: March 30, 2024 — A heated debate has erupted following the auction of a cursed chariot in Kumar Ghat. The opposition parties have taken to the streets, questioning the timing and legality of the auction. Pabitra Kar, speaking at a press conference today, raised critical questions about the process.
“Was the chariot auctioned off to obstruct the judicial proceedings?” asked Kar, emphasizing the need for transparency and adherence to due process.
The controversy stems from an unfortunate incident during a festival at Kumar Ghat. According to CPM leaders, 10 pilgrims lost their lives and 15 others were injured due to the administration’s alleged negligence. Among the victims were children, the elderly, women, and schoolchildren. Despite the severity of the tragedy, the state government has yet to identify the primary instigator responsible for the chariot incident or impose any penalties.
Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha intervened by ordering a magisterial inquiry after the incident. However, the investigation’s progress remains unclear. The CPM leaders, representing the bereaved families, have demanded government jobs for one family member each—a plea that remains unmet.
Adding to the complexity, a court case related to the chariot incident is still pending. Yet, the police administration controversially handed over the cursed chariot to ISKCON authorities, who subsequently auctioned it off to a financially troubled businessman of a different religious background.
Critics argue that this move undermines the ongoing judicial process and raises serious questions about the rule of law in the state. As tensions escalate, all eyes are on the district administration, sub-divisional authorities, and local officials to address the concerns surrounding this contentious auction.
