Agartala, March 20:The opposition Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPIM) has accused ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) supporters of perpetrating pre-poll violence against an octogenarian woman, the mother of a CPIM leader, in Mohanpur, West Tripura district.
The victim, Milan Bala Deb, was allegedly assaulted by BJP supporters, prompting the CPIM leader to file a police complaint and appeal to the Election Commission of India (ECI) for intervention.
A CPIM delegation, led by Opposition Leader Jitendra Chowdhury, visited Milan Bala Deb’s residence to assess the situation and interact with her and her family members.
According to Milan Bala Deb, her son, Raman Deb, a local CPIM leader, had previously received threats from BJP supporters. On the day of the incident, Raman Deb was attacked near a local shop, and when she rushed to his aid, she was also assaulted, sustaining head injuries.
Raman Deb adding to his mother, alleged that BJP supporters chased him with rods and sticks before attacking his mother when she intervened for his rescue.
Jitendra Chowdhury, also the CPIM state secretary, in a complaint to the Chief Election Commissioner and the CEO of India, condemned the incident as an attempt to intimidate opposition supporters and suppress dissent.
He added that despite filing a police complaint and identifying the culprits, no arrests have been made even after three days, raising concerns about the impartiality of law enforcement.
The CPIM leader called for immediate action to address the situation and ensure the safety of opposition supporters ahead of the upcoming elections.
