Agartala, December 26:The Janajati Suraksha Manch in Tripura organised a significant rally on Tuesday, focused on the contentious issue of delisting converted scheduled tribes from the ST list.
Originally slated for Christmas Day, the event found its venue at the Vivekananda Maidan in Agartala.
The Janajati Suraksha Manch, as the organizing body, played a pivotal role in orchestrating a gathering that brought attention to the demand for the exclusion of converted scheduled tribes from the ST list.
They viewed that those tribal members who embrace other religions often deviate from traditional customs and rituals, justifying the need to revoke their Scheduled Tribe privileges.
Furthermore, the organization argues that the Indian Constitution doesn’t define Scheduled Tribe status based on religion but after embracing other religions like Christianity and Islam the converted tribal members are not allowed to practise their original castors and rituals and therefore, ceased to be a member of the Scheduled Tribe.
Moreover they demanded for amendment of the Constitution and viewed that conversion often leads to improved socio-economic conditions, suggesting that delisting would be appropriate.
Meantime, the decision to postpone the rally by a day was prompted by a request from the Chief Minister, who expressed apprehensions about potential law and order disturbances.
The rescheduled rally not only allowed for a peaceful assembly but also showcased the delicate balance between exercising democratic rights and addressing concerns related to public order.
This precautionary measure aimed to ensure the smooth conduct of the event and maintain public safety.
