On demand for Roman script for Kokborak language, TIPRA Students Federation (TSF), student wing of the main Opposition TIPRA Motha, is going to organise a rally in Agartala on coming June 14. This was declared by the office bearers of the TSF during a press briefing on Monday evening.
“On 14th of June, that is day after tomorrow we TSF is going to organise a movement on demand of Roman script for Kokborak language,” said Betshiba Debbarma, joint convenor of the TSF.
“This is not only for the students but those who support Roman script for Kokborak language can join us. It will be starting at 12 PM from Astabal ground and end at 4 PM at Raj Bhavan.”
The student organisation expressed dissatisfaction with the prolonged delay in resolving the script issue, which has been pending for over five decades despite the formation of several commissions that have favored the Roman script, no government, including the present one, has taken the matter seriously.
She added, “The script issue have been there since long when the CPIM was in power, still the same politics is being played with us. If we see that many CBSE schools are English medium and students are much more comfortable in writing in Enghish. I really want the higher authorities look forwards for what we are demanding for.”
The tribal student leader hoped that the Governor is well acquainted about the pending issue of demand for adoption of the Kokborok language with the Roman script.
Several tribal organisation have been demanding for allowing students to answer Kokborak language in the Roman script up to the university level along with Benglai and urge the government to resolve this issue immediately.
Kokborok, the most widely spoken language among the indigenous population of Tripura, constitutes 31 percent of the total population of approximately 40 lakh.
