Agartala, June 5:
On World Environment Day, Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha actively participated in an awareness campaign to combat the use of single-use plastic.
The event, held in Agartala on Monday, included a cleanliness drive and a tree plantation program.
Dr. Saha emphasized the urgent need to ban non-biodegradable single-use plastics, which pose a significant threat to the environment.
During the campaign, Dr. Saha highlighted the importance of public awareness and participation, stating that government-led initiatives alone cannot succeed without the active involvement of citizens.
He urged people to replace plastic with eco-friendly alternatives such as cloth, jute, and paper bags, which are readily available in the market.
Accompanied by Mayor Dipak Majumder, Deputy Mayor Monika Das Datta, local councilor Ratna Datta, and other dignitaries, Dr. Saha personally cleaned the streets and planted saplings.
He spoke about the significance of a clean environment, well-maintained roads and drainage systems, and the necessity of preserving green spaces and forests.
The CM emphasized that over two-thirds of Tripura is covered by forests, which play a vital role in maintaining the overall environmental balance, and assured that the government is committed to their protection and preservation.
The program was initiated by the market committee of Maharaj Ganja Bazar, the oldest and largest market in the capital city.
