Former Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court, Ajai Lamba, has been appointed to head a three-member Judicial Inquiry Commission by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India. The commission has been established to investigate the causes and factors associated with the ongoing crisis in Manipur, as well as the unfortunate incident that occurred on May 3.
Assisting Justice Ajai Lamba on the commission will be Himanshu Shekhar Das, a retired IAS officer, and Aloka Prabhakar, a retired IPS officer. The notification announcing the formation of the commission was issued by Piyush Goyal, Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs.
The commission has been given a timeframe of six months from the date of its first sitting to complete its inquiry. Its main objectives include investigating the causes and spread of the violence and riots that targeted members of different communities in Manipur on May 3 and subsequent events. Additionally, the commission will examine whether there were any lapses or dereliction of duty on the part of responsible authorities or individuals. It will also assess the adequacy of the administrative measures taken to prevent and handle the violence and riots.
Furthermore, the commission is open to receiving complaints or allegations from individuals or associations. Such complaints must be submitted in the prescribed form and accompanied by relevant affidavits.
This appointment of a judicial inquiry commission reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring a fair and impartial investigation into the Manipur crisis.
