Agartala, July 18:
Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on Saturday announced that the state government will recruit more than 1,100 police personnel, including 218 Sub-Inspectors and over 900 constables, as part of a major initiative to strengthen law enforcement and modernise the state police force.
Speaking at the passing-out parade of newly trained of recruit police constable (men) 92nd batch at Parade ground of 2nd battalion of TSR at RK Nagar and later interacting with reporters, Saha, who also holds the Home portfolio, said the recruitment process for 218 Sub-Inspectors has already been initiated, while the recruitment of over 900 constables will begin shortly.
He said the expansion of the police force is part of the government’s broader commitment to ensuring adequate manpower across key departments, including Police, Health, Public Works, Agriculture and Sports, in consultation with the Finance Department.
“We do not want any department to suffer from a shortage of manpower,” the Chief Minister said, adding that nearly 21,000 government jobs have been provided since the present government assumed office through a transparent recruitment process without legal disputes or court intervention.
Emphasising that a robust law and order system is essential for economic growth and investment, Saha said the government is simultaneously pursuing police modernisation by strengthening training, adopting advanced technology, enhancing cybercrime investigation capabilities, promoting community policing and improving measures for women’s safety.
He said all police personnel have been trained in the implementation of the country’s new criminal laws, while Fast Track Courts have been strengthened to ensure speedy justice, particularly in cases involving crimes against women. The state has also conducted extensive public awareness programmes, including exhibitions in Agartala, to familiarise citizens, students and legal professionals with the new criminal laws.
Highlighting the changing nature of policing, Saha stressed the need for continuous skill upgradation through regular refresher training to enable personnel to respond effectively to emerging security challenges, particularly cybercrime.
The Chief Minister also noted that women constitute a significant proportion of the latest batch of recruits, reflecting the government’s commitment to increasing women’s participation in policing in line with the national vision of women-led development.
Congratulating the newly inducted personnel, Saha urged them to uphold integrity, discipline, professionalism and compassion while serving the public.
“A police uniform is not merely a dress; it represents responsibility, courage, honesty and public trust,” he said.
Referring to the celebration of the 150th anniversary of Tripura Police, Saha said the force has earned national recognition, including the President’s Colour, for its distinguished service.
He also asserted that sustained efforts by the government have helped curb violence and extremist activities, contributing to a stable law and order environment in the state.
Reacting to criticism from the Opposition over policing, Saha accused opposition leaders of ignoring their own record in office, alleging that Tripura had witnessed terrorism, violence and arson during their tenure. He said the public is capable of judging both the government’s performance and the Opposition’s conduct.
