Agartala, January 30
As artificial intelligence rapidly reshapes governance, economy and the future of work, Tripura has begun positioning itself firmly on India’s emerging AI map, with a strong focus on awareness, skill development and real-world applications at the grassroots level.
In a major move towards AI-driven governance, the Directorate of Information Technology, Government of Tripura, on Friday organised a Regional-Level AI Awareness Workshop at Pragya Bhavan, Agartala, as part of the pre-summit outreach programmes for the upcoming INDIAai–AI Impact Summit 2026.
The global summit, scheduled to be held on February 19–20, 2026 at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, was announced by the Prime Minister at the France AI Action Summit 2025. Notably, this will be the first time such a high-level global AI forum is being hosted in the Global South, reflecting India’s growing leadership in artificial intelligence.
The workshop was inaugurated by Tripura Chief Secretary JK Sinha in the presence of IT Secretary Kiran Gitte, Director (In-Charge), IT Department, Suprakash Jamatia and other dignitaries.
Addressing the programme, the Chief Secretary said that with rapidly changing times and fast-evolving technologies, it has become essential not only to adopt new tools but also to continuously reskill and upskill the workforce.
He noted that education or skills relevant even a day ago may not remain relevant today, making continuous learning crucial in the AI era.
Sinha said the Tripura government is actively working to strengthen skill development, particularly among youth, so that they can take maximum advantage of emerging opportunities created by artificial intelligence.
Referring to India’s large youth population, he cautioned that the demographic dividend must not turn into a demographic disaster due to lack of preparedness in new-age technologies.
Sinha further observed that historically, nations that embraced new technologies early and simultaneously developed human resources gained maximum benefits.
India, he said, is now moving in that direction, and Tripura is aligning itself with the national vision.
Highlighting India’s global footprint in technology leadership, Sinha said it is a matter of pride that several leading global AI and technology companies are headed by professionals of Indian origin, including Google CEO Sundar Pichai and Microsoft Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the event, IT Secretary Kiran Gitte said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has laid strong emphasis on the adoption of artificial intelligence across all sectors of social and economic life. As part of that vision, Tripura has organised the pre-summit outreach programme in collaboration with the National e-Governance Division, with participation from engineering colleges and institutes across the state.
He said more than 500 students attended the programme, and discussions primarily focused on the scope of AI implementation in Tripura, particularly in sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, education and effective utilisation of the state’s available resources.
Gitte also announced that the state government will soon launch a 100-day challenge on the use of AI in various sectors at the grassroots level. From these initiatives, ten successful interventions will be selected and supported by the government under the Tripura Startup Policy and the New Generation Innovation Network initiated by the IT Department.
The workshop witnessed participation of students and faculty members from premier institutions including NIT Agartala, IIIT Agartala, National Law University Tripura and the National Forensic Sciences University.
Technical sessions were conducted by experts from academia and industry, who deliberated on Digital India initiatives, practical AI applications and the development of safe and inclusive AI frameworks.
The INDIAai–AI Impact Summit is being organised under the INDIAai Mission of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, with a financial outlay of over ₹10,300 crore. The mission aims to build a robust AI ecosystem under the vision of “Making AI in India and Making AI Work for India.”
Through initiatives such as FutureSkills, Innovation Centres, compute infrastructure, application development and startup financing, the mission is creating new opportunities for students and innovators in Tier-2 and Tier-3 regions.
In collaboration with INDIAai, the Tripura government has also initiated steps to establish AI laboratories in local educational institutions, ensuring that students in the state gain access to advanced skills and training.
With this regional outreach programme, Tripura has taken a significant step toward embracing artificial intelligence in governance, education and entrepreneurship, signalling the state’s intent to ensure that the benefits of the AI revolution reach the grassroots.
