Agartala, January 15: In a joint operation, the Government Railway Police (GRP) and the Railway Protection Force (RPF) of Agartala Railway Station arrested four tribal women on Thursday afternoon while they were allegedly attempting to smuggle a large quantity of dry marijuana by train, suspected to be destined outside Tripura.
Confirming the arrest, Officer-in-Charge of GRP Agartala, Raju Bhowmik, said the suspects were detained on suspicion from platform number 1 near the RPF post.
During a thorough check of their luggage, security personnel recovered 46.590 kilograms of contraband ganja concealed in their trolley bags and hand bags.
“The estimated black market value of the seized narcotics is between ₹10 lakh and ₹15 lakh,” Bhowmik said.
A case has been registered under Agartala GRPS Case No. 2026GRP006, under Sections 21(C) and 29 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.
The arrested women have been identified as Jesmin Debbarma (26), Abi Debbarma (21), Rani Debbarma (39), and Eva Debbarma (19).
Police said further investigation is underway to ascertain the source of the contraband, its intended destination, and to identify other individuals involved in the narcotics trafficking network.
