Agartala, August 22:Police have arrested two young men, Mithun Debnath (24) and Bower Deb Barma (24), on charges of allegedly raping a 16-year-old minor girl on Thursday evening. The disturbing incident is reported to have occurred inside a car at the Udaypur railway station area, falling under the jurisdiction of the Radhakishorepur Women’s Police Station.
According to Sub-Inspector Ruby Baidya who is leading the investigation, the suspects, who are residents of the Mohanbhog area in Sepahijala district, allegedly picked up the minor girl in a car with the registration number TR07 3545 at around 7 PM and drove her to the secluded railway station where inside the vehicle they accusedly had sexually assaulted her.
The breakthrough in the case came later that night at approximately 10 PM. The two accused and the minor girl were intercepted at a police checking point, managed by the Kakraban police station while they were en route back to Mohanbhog. The car was also seized.
During initial questioning at the checking point, officers became suspicious and separately questioned the girl, who then revealed the details of the assault.
Reportedly the girl, accompanied by two of her neighbours, went to Tripureswari temple on Thursday evening. After visiting the temple, two boys took her to Udaipur railway station in a car. On the way, Mithun and Bower raped her in the moving vehicle.
This information was subsequently relayed to the Radhakishorepur Women’s Police Station.
The formal complaint was lodged on Friday after the victim confided in her family about the traumatic ordeal. Her family immediately approached the Radhakishorepur Women’s Police Station and filed a written complaint alleging rape.
Acting on the complaint, police have registered a formal case (No. 30/2025) under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, including Section 376 (rape), and crucially, under the stringent Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012.
In accordance with standard procedure, the minor survivor was taken to a hospital for a mandatory medical examination. A forensic team was also dispatched to the crime scene on Friday afternoon to examine the impounded vehicle and collect evidence.
The two accused remain in police custody as the probe continues.
