Agartala, Aug 4: Tipra Motha chairman and BJP ally Pradyot Kishore Debbarma on Monday voiced strong displeasure over the continued delay in conducting the Village Council (VC) elections in Tripura’s tribal autonomous regions. He announced plans to visit New Delhi to consult senior legal experts and indicated that he may approach the Supreme Court if the State Election Commission fails to act on the High Court’s directive.
Speaking to the media, Debbarma criticized the State Election Commission for its inaction despite a High Court order mandating the conduct of the long-pending VC elections in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) areas.
“The absence of elected village councils is severely affecting the lives of poor villagers. Their basic needs are being ignored, and administrative gaps are growing. If the Election Commission continues to ignore the High Court’s ruling, we will have no choice but to move the Supreme Court to uphold the rights of our people,” Debbarma said.
Clarifying his position within the ruling alliance, the Tipra Motha chief stated, “Being part of an alliance does not mean abandoning core issues. There is no rule that allies must agree on everything. The welfare of our people comes first, and we are ready to fight independently on this issue.”
He reaffirmed his commitment to grassroots democracy and governance, insisting that the prolonged delay in holding VC elections is unjust. “I cannot stand by and watch my people suffer due to political inaction. It is time justice is served and democratic institutions are restored in the tribal regions,” Debbarma added.
His assertive stance increases pressure on both the State Election Commission and the BJP-led government, with tribal areas continuing to face administrative neglect in the absence of functioning local bodies.
