Agartala, August 1: A high-level delegation of the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT), a key regional party in the state and ruling NDA alliance partner of BJP, held a courtesy meeting with the Election Commission of India (ECI) at Nirvachan Sadan, New Delhi on Friday. The visit comes days after a similar meeting by the Tipra Motha party.
The delegation was led by Sukla Charan Noatia, Cabinet Minister in the Tripura government, and included senior party leaders such as IPFT president Prem Kumar Reang, vice president and former minister Krishna Kanta Jamatia, and general secretary Swapan Debbarma.
During the meeting with the full bench of the ECI, the IPFT submitted a detailed memorandum highlighting several pressing issues concerning Tripura’s electoral integrity and the rights of indigenous communities. Among their key concerns was the issue of illegal infiltration and the presence of fake voters in the electoral rolls.
Sources said the delegation urged the Commission to take strong legal action against illegal settlers and called for identification and removal of non-genuine voters from Tripura’s voter list who with fake documents and with help of local leaders go enrolled.
The party’s memorandum reaffirmed IPFT’s commitment to strengthening the democratic process in the state and safeguarding the rights of indigenous people.
The move reflects the party’s proactive stance on electoral transparency ahead of upcoming TTAADC elections in Tripura early next year.
Earlier IPFT had expressed dissatisfaction over the state government’s inaction on the recent MHA notification to identify and deport illegal migrants, and had submitted memorandum to the Governor of Tripura demanding for the central government’s direct intervention in resolving issues faced by the indigenous communities due to illegal settlers.
Notably, Tipra Motha had also demanded a Special Intensive Revision of the voter list in Tripura, similar to the drive conducted in Bihar, to ensure the removal of illegal voters.
