Agartala, August 1: In a major breakthrough, the North Tripura district police have busted an inter-state gang of dacoits involved in a recent robbery and several other crimes across the region.
Eight gang members have been arrested so far, including the leader who was operating between North Tripura and Karimganj district of neighbouring Assam.
Addressing the media, North Tripura Superintendent of Police (SP) Avinash Rai said the robbery took place in the early hours of July 25 at Ichailalcherra under Kadamtala police station, where cash worth ₹67,000, gold jewellery, mobile phones and other valuables were looted.
A case was lodged by Subrata Kumaresh at Kadamtala police station and accordingly a special team, led by the Additional SP Kamal Debbarma, was formed to track the culprits.
In the initial phase of the investigation, police arrested three persons, including
Kampu Sukla Das, Jamir Ali and one Md Selim Uddin from whose possession, police recovered 12 saris, six T-shirts, and seven paramilitary uniforms including those of BSF and Tripura State Rifles (TSR).
Tools used for breaking into houses—such as hammers, knives, and cutters—were also seized, marking a significant lead in the case.
During police interrogation, Salim Uddin confessed to the involvement of five more gang members and revealed the location of the stolen goods.
Acting on the information, the special team comprising the Additional SP, SDPO, and Officer-in-Charge of Kadamtala conducted multiple raids and apprehended five more accused.
Along with the arrests, police recovered a country-made firearm, nine live rounds, several sharp weapons, seven mobile phones, SIM cards, a gold chain, pendant, necklace, earrings, silver items, and additional house-breaking tools.
“This is a major success for the district police. Most of the looted items have been recovered and efforts are underway to trace the remaining articles,” SP Avinash Rai said.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Abdul Kayes – who is the gang leader beside Panki Mia, Md. Abdul Jabbar, Rosan Ali, Anam Uddin and Rahim Ali.
Police said all accused are being interrogated and further investigation is in progress.
