Agartala, June 16: Amid tight security arrangements, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday staged a protest march in Agartala condemning recent incidents of attacks on the ancestral home of Rabindranath Tagore and on minority communities in Bangladesh.
Led by BJP Tripura state president and Member of Parliament Rajib Bhattacharjee, the protest march began from Swami Vivekananda Maidan and culminated near the office of the Assistant High Commission of Bangladesh in Agartala.
Carrying placards and banners, the protestors raised strong slogans denouncing the violence and alleged inaction under the interim government of Bangladesh led by Mohammed Yunus.
The BJP leaders demanded immediate intervention and stringent action to protect minority communities and preserve the cultural heritage associated with Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore.
Speaking to the media, Rajib Bhattacharjee said, “The attack on the ancestral home of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore is an attack on the soul of Bengali culture and heritage. We also express grave concern over the continued violence against minority communities in Bangladesh. We urge the government there to ensure their safety and uphold human rights.”
He added that till now the Yunus government failed to take necessary action to arrest the culprits in the recent incident.
The BJP leader seeking immediate redressal and assurance of minority safety and cultural site protection demaned that the present government for its failure in protecting the minorities, their properties and heritages should immediately stepdown.
Additional security personnel were deployed in the area to prevent any untoward incident during the protest.
This protest is part of a larger outcry across various parts of India and the diaspora demanding accountability and cultural respect in the wake of recent incidents in Bangladesh.
